Watch a Backcountry film or video

User story

As a paid member, I want to watch a native film or video so I can watch without leaving Backcountry.

Draft requirements for review · Updated 2026-10-19

What the app should do

  • Persist metadata/access/media references for videos already represented in the public catalog. A database record does not implement a missing video destination or player.
  • Play accessible film or video natively inside Backcountry.
  • Show creator attribution and related work.
  • Support saving and continuing playback for an eligible account.
  • For Visitors, define which video is public or preview-only and gate personal actions appropriately.

What to check in the demo

Follow these steps from the role’s landing page through navigation and feature checks.

Review asStart here: Home

Begin on the paid Member Home. Use the Paid member demo role or Casey Bennett in Try a demo account, then select Member in the account/workspace menu if necessary. This creates a genuine local session with a seeded no-charge test membership; it does not upgrade a different account.

Navigation from sign-in

  1. 01Open the fictional Paid member account through the connected sign-in service. Seeded Home review opens directly. Real HOL staff access and protected actions require an authenticator check.
  2. 02The intended path is to select a film/video from Home. The native playable video destination is not built yet.

Feature checks start here

Native video player — planned · Full workflow planned

Public-content reads are available for dev review; full story acceptance and stakeholder approval remain separate. Follow current navigation as far as available; remaining navigation and feature checks describe the intended flow once built.

  1. 03Current UI review: follow the navigation as far as the explicitly available screen; the complete feature below is not built. Stop when the named control is absent.
  2. 04Planned acceptance — Start, pause and resume an available sample video.
  3. 05Planned acceptance — Open creator and related-work destinations.
  4. 06Planned acceptance — Save and resume playback in the eligible account context.
  5. 07Planned acceptance — Verify the Visitor preview and account prompt once that access is implemented.

Backend work for this feature

Backend development authorized · Dev only

What needs to be supported

  • Persist metadata/access/media references for videos already represented in the public catalog. A database record does not implement a missing video destination or player.

How to verify in dev

  1. Verify published-only anonymous projection, no private/protected payload, stable IDs and links, missing/unpublished records, empty/loading/error UI, and no silent static fallback. Idempotent seed rerun preserves edited records; authenticated/dummy Home entry remains unchanged.
  2. Inspect existing public video descriptions; missing playback stays explicitly unavailable rather than implying a new working player.

Before this can work

  • Begin on the paid Member Home. Use the Paid member demo role or Casey Bennett in Try a demo account, then select Member in the account/workspace menu if necessary. This creates a genuine local session with a seeded no-charge test membership; it does not upgrade a different account.
  • An appropriate playable source asset and its creator/context information.
  • Defined public/premium video access and playback-resume behavior.

No prerequisite story has been confirmed. The setup above describes the content or decisions needed.
