What you can explore now.
This page tracks the demonstration app: what can be reviewed, what is taking shape, and what is planned. Interactions may use seeded content or simulated state. A completed demo story does not imply a live service or an approved first release.
Demo build backlog
Use a story ID when sharing feedback. Its phase label maps to the ; it does not limit which features the demo can show. Demo improvements span phases and are not assigned to a product launch phase.

Find and join a group that fits me
Group directory has meaningful categories and lets the member compare and join more than one group.
See what visitors and members can access
Public, free-account and active paid-member states use the selected access table and contextual registration/upgrade paths. Benefits and plans remain public, but no trial or temporary paid-feature access is offered; protected actions require trusted active entitlement.
Read a digital magazine issue with my membership
Demo issue reader shows entitlement, archive entry, reading controls, and an access-denied state.
Choose a membership or change my plan
Subscribe, Shop → Memberships, account upgrades and contextual premium gates use the same public plan catalog, review and clearly simulated checkout. Account creation/sign-in, pending versus confirmed activation and safe return behavior support D066–D068; no trial, live charge or client-only entitlement grant is offered. Merchandise and membership need not share a cart.

From Mount Mansfield, choose timing, objective, and group context; review a relevant editorial checklist; save the plan; and see it on Home and in My Backcountry. The flow must not imply live route guidance or safety automation.
Find trip reports and practical tips for a place
Trip reports and field observations can be discovered from a place and opened in their native content view.
Explore gear reviews and editor picks
Gear collection distinguishes editorial reviews, editor selections, and clearly labeled partner offers.
Find members and guides who choose to appear on the map
Map or place view shows region-level opted-in people and guide service areas with visible privacy controls.
See updates from people and places I follow
The shared notification drawer includes meaningful updates from followed people and places and respects profile notification preferences. HOL-D045 supplies the toast, drawer, unread state, and navigation interaction; this story defines which followed activity belongs there.
Explore past Backcountry stories
Archive discovery supports useful search or browsing and opens distinct canonical story views inside the app using seeded fictional content. Content provenance is documented in the Brief; historical catalog migration is outside this demo story.
React to and share a published story
Like, comment, save, and share actions visibly preserve the same engagement state across discovery surfaces.
Receive and act on in-app notifications
A demo action generates a dismissible toast with an Open action. The bell opens a responsive drawer with unread count and read/unread states; dismissing a toast leaves the item in the drawer. Clicking a toast or drawer item marks it read, closes the drawer, and opens the related native page; browser Back works. Four functional simulated examples cover a followed contributor story, followed place update, joined-group activity, and event preparation reminder. Editorial, place, community, and event preferences control future optional updates. The prototype sends no push or email and uses no live activity service.
Apply for a private gear test
A seeded gear-test listing explains eligibility, brand involvement, review expectations, and timing; a member can submit a simulated application and see its status. No real application is sent.
Run and publish a private gear test
A seeded operator view shows tester selection, test status, editorial review, and a published review that clearly discloses how gear was supplied. Fulfillment and partner contracts remain open decisions.
Shop Backcountry goods and gift certificates
Shop is accessible to every customer-facing role; a sample catalog distinguishes merchandise and one-time gift certificates and supports cart review and checkout confirmation. Checkout remains simulated, with no payment, order, fulfillment or email; this boundary is documented in the Brief. Shop links to the same membership selection used by Subscribe, without implying a shared cart or that certificates pay for memberships.
Give a Backcountry membership
A simulated gift flow separates purchaser from recipient, explains a fixed gift term and redemption, and shows recipient access after redemption. The recipient is not set to auto-renew unless they later choose a plan. No payment or message is sent.
Check conditions for a place
A place page groups sample weather, snow, and field observations with source, location, and update time. Data is clearly seeded; the experience makes no terrain recommendation or safety determination.
Opt in to powder alerts
A member can select a place, view a sample trigger and message, and turn the alert off. The demo explains source freshness and consent, and clearly states that no live conditions are monitored and no notification is sent.
Find and fix unclear demo content
Audit the public-facing demo, record specific content issues, fix the issues identified and verify the resulting copy and navigation. Findings and fixes will be recorded as the work happens.
Replace internal wording in the weekly backlog summary
Replace the internal-documentation wording in the opening sentence of Progress updates → A visible work queue with “The demo backlog contains 51 curated stories:” and preserve the remainder of the paragraph and its review counts.

Complete sign in and manage my session with role-appropriate success, interruption/recovery and access-denial states. Review frontend readiness separately from verified local backend data/security acceptance; no real hosted account or payment is created.
Give feedback on stories and track HOL responses
An authenticated authorized reviewer can submit feedback attached to a stable story/section; an authorized HOL reviewer can triage and record a response/status. Saved records retain author and timestamp, enforce the agreed visibility policy, and are isolated from demo member data and public visitors.

Join Backcountry directly from a visit
From public Home or a restricted feature, a visitor can compare public plans, identify or create an account, complete the clearly simulated checkout and reach active test membership only after trusted backend activation; the original destination is restored and no trial is offered.
Create a free account and become a paid member later
A visitor registers to complete an allowed free action, uses the free experience with premium content locked, and later upgrades the same account through the shared membership flow; saved public work and preferences remain and the originating member feature opens after backend-confirmed activation.
Upgrade my existing account to paid membership
A signed-in free account can upgrade from account/Home or a contextual member gate using the shared plans and simulated checkout; after trusted activation it retains the same identity/data and resumes the selected destination, with failed/cancelled upgrades leaving free rights intact.
Activate and enforce paid membership access
The backend records one membership intent/outcome for the authenticated account and eligible plan, grants active test entitlement only through the approved trusted demo mechanism, and enforces public/free/paid access in data operations across return sessions; cancelled, failed, repeated, forged and unauthorized requests never grant paid access.
Read and reply to conversations across Backcountry
Community posts show two comments from the same contextual thread that opens in full. Eligible sample accounts can read, sort, like and submit comments/replies; new submissions remain author-only awaiting moderation, survive reload locally and do not change published counts. Public/member/group gates follow the selected access rules.
